See pizza and die? Only in Naples! – part I

Hi everyone!

Today I would like to take you on a journey through Naples – a quintessence of Italianness. This is one of the cities which you either love or hate because finding ourselves in the midst of the Italian chaos, can become as inspiring as overwhelming. However, we (and even the Italians from NorthJ) have to admit that except for high crime rate, garbage on the streets and Neapolitan dialect which no one understands, the Neapolitan cuisine satisfies even the most demanding tastes. The hero of today’s post is pizza, which the cradle is Naples. It is here, where millions of tourists come to taste it every year and admire its simplicity, authenticity and a special flavour, that comes with the best Italian ingredients. I won’t describe every type of pizza because I think that more or less we get good at it :D, but I would like to recommend you which kind of pizza is the best to eat in Naples and where. Given that the subject is far and wide, allow me to split it into two parties. Let’s go! J

In the beginning, it is worth noting that it’s hard to find tasteless pizza in Naples. All because the main ingredients, like mozzarella, tomatoes and olive oil are produced right there. Thanks to that, we can usually be sure of freshness of food. The second important point is simplicity of the pizza which was initially the meat of the poor people. If you want to eat one with pineapple, corn, ketchup and garlic souse, this is not the way. What’s more – the native Neapolitan could tell you a few unpleasant things and as a result don’t serve you ;). No kidding! Pizza is their flagship food, which doesn’t need American additions. Don’t forget it! Of course, in the menu you will find many types of pizza, but all consist only of real Italian ingredients which taste like nowhere else. So now the main question is which pizza is worth eating in Naples to get the maximum pleasure and remember it for a long time? Paradoxically, the simplest one :D. I’m referring to Margherita, of course. Maybe some of you are disappointed but trust me that this is the only right choice, especially if you visit Naples for the first time. The secret lies in mozzarella, more precisely the buffalo mozzarella (in Italian- mozzarella di bufala), which is traditionally manufactured in this region. This is the absolute hit and is nothing like mozzarella in our supermarkets. I recommend you to buy it also directly from the Neapolitan dairy shop when it is still warm. I’m pretty sure that you will love it J. Besides, please don’t complain about the thickness of the dough. It should be thin and there is no other option :P. Another important thing is size. Remember that the Italians eat a lot and in their menus, you won’t find sizes to choose as in Poland. Pizza that will be served, will always be more or less 35 centimetres so be prepared and don’t gorge yourselves on other things earlier :D. At the end I would like to strongly recommend you pizzerias like:

  • Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba (the first pizzeria in the world!!!)
  • Pizzeria Di Matteo
  • L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele

They are my favourite ones but I invite you to come to Naples and discover more such gems. Consider the simplicity and for sure you will enjoy an unique taste which will stay with you for long. I’m waiting for your recommendations next time! :D

Bye! J
